Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, best known for her novel Jane Eyre. She was born in 1816 in Thornton, Yorkshire. Brontë published her works under the pen name Currer Bell. Her first novel, The Professor, was rejected by publishers but later published posthumously in 1857.
Her most famous work, Jane Eyre, was published in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. The novel achieved immediate success and is considered a classic of English literature. Brontë also published Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853. These novels were published under her pseudonym and later under her real name.
Brontë was the third of six children in the Brontë family. She attended the Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge and later Roe Head School. Alongside her sisters Emily and Anne, she published a collection of poems, Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, in 1846.
Brontë’s works have been translated into numerous languages and adapted for stage and screen. Jane Eyre has remained in print since its first publication. Brontë died in 1855. Her final novel, The Professor, was published posthumously in 1857.
