Catherine Rayner is a renowned author and illustrator of children’s books, known for her distinctive artistic style and engaging storytelling. Born in Harrogate, England, she pursued her passion for art by studying Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art, where she graduated in 2004.
Rayner’s debut picture book, Augustus and His Smile, was published in 2006 and received critical acclaim, winning the Booktrust Early Years Award in 2006. Her work is celebrated for its expressive illustrations and the use of mixed media, often featuring animals as central characters.
In 2009, Rayner was awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for her book Harris Finds His Feet, which highlights her ability to capture the nuances of animal characters with warmth and charm. Her other notable works include Ernest, Norris, The Bear Who Shared, and Solomon Crocodile.
Rayner’s books have been translated into multiple languages, reaching a global audience. She continues to create new works, contributing significantly to children’s literature with her unique blend of art and narrative.
In addition to her books, Rayner has illustrated for various projects and exhibitions, further establishing her reputation in the field of illustration. Her work remains influential, inspiring both young readers and aspiring illustrators.
Her book Smelly Louie was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2015, underscoring her continued excellence in children’s literature.
