Caryl Lewis biography

Caryl Lewis is a Welsh author and screenwriter known for her work in both Welsh and English. She has written novels, children’s books, and scripts for television. Lewis is the author of the acclaimed novel Martha, Jac a Sianco, which won the Wales Book of the Year award in 2005. The novel was later adapted into a film released in 2008.

Her children’s books include the Magical Train Ride series and Tir na n-Og award-winning titles such as Y Bwthyn and Plant y Cnau. Lewis has also written The Jewelled Jaguar, which won the Tir na n-Og Award in 2018. She has contributed to Welsh-language television, including writing for the long-running S4C drama Pobol y Cwm and the series Hinterland (Y Gwyll).

Lewis studied at Durham University and Aberystwyth University. Her work has been recognised with multiple awards, including the Wales Book of the Year and several Tir na n-Og Awards. In 2022, her novel Seed was published by Macmillan Children’s Books.

Her writing spans adult fiction, children’s literature, and screenwriting, with a focus on Welsh culture and rural life. Lewis’s novel Martha, Jac a Sianco remains a significant contribution to contemporary Welsh literature.
