Bill Bryson is an American-British author known for his works of travel, science, and language, including several books for younger readers. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and later became a British citizen. Bryson’s writing career began with travel books such as The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (1989) and Notes from a Small Island (1995).
Bryson’s children’s and young adult titles include A Really Short History of Nearly Everything (2008), an adaptation of his bestselling science book A Short History of Nearly Everything (2003) for younger readers. The book presents scientific concepts and discoveries in accessible language for children and has been published in several updated editions.
He has received multiple awards for his writing. A Short History of Nearly Everything won the Aventis Prize for Science Books in 2004. In 2005, Bryson received the Descartes Prize for science communication from the European Union. He was awarded an honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2006 for services to literature.
In 2012, Bryson published A Really Short History of Nearly Everything in a fully revised and updated edition, further cementing its place as a popular science resource for young readers. His books have been translated into numerous languages and remain widely used in educational settings.
In 2013, Bryson was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society for his contribution to the public understanding of science. His work continues to be recognised for its clarity and engagement with young audiences.
