Bali Rai is a British author known for his work in children’s and young adult fiction. He grew up in Leicester and attended Leicester University, where he studied politics. Rai’s debut novel, (Un)arranged Marriage, was published by Corgi in 2001. The book explores themes of cultural identity and arranged marriage, and it received critical acclaim.
Following his debut, Rai published several novels including The Crew (2003), Rani & Sukh (2004), and Dream On (2006). His writing often addresses contemporary social issues and reflects multicultural Britain. Rani & Sukh was shortlisted for the Booktrust Teenage Prize in 2005 and the Leicester Book of the Year Award.
Rai has contributed to the Quick Reads initiative, producing accessible fiction for adults with lower literacy levels. He has also written for the Barrington Stoke series, which supports dyslexic and reluctant readers. His books have been included in the Reading Well scheme and recommended by various literacy organisations.
In addition to novels, Rai has written short stories and contributed to anthologies. His works have been translated into several languages. In 2014, he received the North East Book Award for Killing Honour. Rai’s novel Web of Darkness was published by Corgi in 2014.
He has appeared at literary festivals and events across the UK, promoting reading and diversity in literature. In 2021, Bali Rai was awarded an MBE for services to literature.
