Axel Scheffler, born on 12 December 1957 in Hamburg, Germany, is a renowned illustrator celebrated for his distinctive contributions to children’s literature. From an early age, he exhibited a passion for drawing, which eventually guided his career path. After an initial attempt to pursue art education in Germany, he transitioned to studying History of Art at the University of Hamburg. However, he left the course and completed alternative national service, assisting individuals with mental health challenges.
In 1982, Scheffler relocated to England to study Visual Communications at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, Wiltshire. His studies included an exchange programme at the Cooper Union in New York City. During this period, he resolved to focus on illustration as his professional pursuit. Upon graduating in 1985, he settled in London and embarked on a freelance career, producing illustrations for advertising, editorial content, and children’s books.
Scheffler’s first illustrated book, The Piemakers by Helen Cresswell, was published in 1988. His collaboration with author Julia Donaldson began in 1992 with A Squash and a Squeeze. Their partnership yielded numerous acclaimed titles, most notably The Gruffalo (1999), which has achieved international success, selling millions of copies and being translated into multiple languages. Their works have been adapted into various formats, including theatre productions and animated films.
Beyond his collaborations with Donaldson, Scheffler has illustrated a wide array of children’s books, including the Pip and Posy series. His artistic contributions have been recognised through various commissions, such as designing the UK’s official Christmas stamps in 2012 and creating the Treasury’s Christmas card in 2006. His illustrations have been exhibited internationally, reflecting his significant impact on children’s literature.
