Anna Fargher is a British children’s author known for her historical adventure novels featuring animal protagonists. Raised on the Suffolk coast by an artist and a ballet teacher, she grew up in a creatively rich environment. Fargher attended Bedales School for sixth form, where she studied English, Art, and Drama. She later read English Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, before working in the British art world and opening her own gallery.
Fargher’s debut novel, The Umbrella Mouse, was written on her phone during daily commutes on the London Underground. Published in 2019, the story follows Pip Hanway, a young mouse who becomes involved with a secret animal resistance network in Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War. The book won the 2019 Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Award for Fiction, was Waterstones Book of the Month, and was longlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
A sequel, Umbrella Mouse to the Rescue, was published in 2020 and continues Pip’s journey through wartime Europe. Fargher’s third novel, The Fire Cats of London, released in 2022, is set during the Great Fire of London and follows two wildcats caught in the chaos. It was named Children’s Book of the Week by both The Times and the Daily Mail.
Her fourth book, Delta and the Lost City, was published in 2024. Set in ancient Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the story follows Delta, a wolfdog, in a race for survival. The book was selected as The Bookseller’s Children’s Book of the Month.
