Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Alom Shaha is a British author and science communicator known for his work in promoting science education. He was born in Bangladesh and moved to the UK at a young age. Shaha has a background in physics, having studied at Imperial College London. He has worked as a physics teacher and has been involved in various educational projects aimed at making science accessible to a wider audience.
Shaha is the author of The Young Atheist’s Handbook, published in 2012 by Biteback Publishing. The book combines memoir and philosophical exploration, discussing his journey from a Muslim upbringing to atheism. It has been well-received for its candid and personal approach to the subject.
In addition to his writing, Shaha has contributed to various media outlets, including The Guardian and The Times Educational Supplement, where he writes about science education and related topics. He has also appeared on television and radio programmes to discuss science and education.
Shaha’s work extends to children’s literature, with titles such as Mr Shaha’s Recipes for Wonder, published by Scribe UK in 2018. This book aims to inspire children to explore scientific concepts through simple experiments and activities. His follow-up book, Mr Shaha’s Marvellous Machines, was published in 2020, continuing his mission to engage young readers with science.
