Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Alice Sebold is an American author best known for her debut novel The Lovely Bones, first published in 2002. The novel tells the story of a young girl who, after her murder, watches from the afterlife as her family and friends cope with her loss. The book became a bestseller and has been translated into multiple languages. In 2009, it was adapted into a feature film directed by Peter Jackson.
Sebold studied at Syracuse University, where she experienced a violent assault that later became the subject of her memoir, Lucky. Published in 1999, Lucky recounts her experience and its aftermath, receiving recognition for its candid exploration of trauma and survival. Her writing often addresses themes of violence, trauma, and recovery.
In 2007, Sebold published her second novel, The Almost Moon. This work, like her previous books, received international attention. Sebold’s books have been published by established publishers, including Little, Brown and Company.
The Lovely Bones was awarded the 2003 American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award for Adult Fiction.
