Our review:

Hana has travelled from Syria with her family and very few possessions. Oscar’s family open their home to them while they arrange school and find somewhere to live. The kindness, gratitude, and compassion between the families make this an enjoyable, heartwarming read.

Adjusting to a new country, learning a new language, trying unfamiliar food, and adapting to a different culture bring Hana some emotional ups and downs. Meanwhile, Rose, a stray cat, has been welcomed into the home to have her kittens. The hospitality of Oscar’s family and a bold little kitten help build strong relationships and support Hana as she settles into her new life.

Hana becomes attached to one of the kittens and names it Amal. When the time comes for the kittens to find new homes, Hana is devastated. However, Oscar, inspired by his parents’ example of kindness, works hard to find a solution.

The story features cute black-and-white illustrations that break up the text, helping readers visualise the characters. The chapters are the perfect length, and the storyline is simple enough for children to follow. The Bold Kitten explores themes of diversity, different cultures, kindness, and acceptance.

Parts of the book are written from the cats’ perspective, expressing emotions such as fear, worry, comfort, and trust. This approach can help children understand that animals have feelings too, fostering empathy and compassion.

Prepare for a few tears – both sad and happy. This is an easy read for children aged 6+ and will especially appeal to animal lovers.

Many thanks to Little Tiger for the review copy.
