Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Yolanda T. Marshall is a children’s book author born in Georgetown, Guyana, who moved to Canada as a teenager. She writes picture books that draw on Caribbean culture, music, food and festivals.
Her first children’s book, Keman’s First Carnival, was published in 2016. Subsequent titles include A Piece of Black Cake for Santa (2017), My Soca Birthday Party: with Jollof Rice and Steel Pans (2020), C is for Carnival (2021), and Hot Cross Buns For Everyone (2022).
Marshall is represented by agent Carly Watters. She has stated that her stories are inspired by her son, by celebrations, and by a desire to reflect diversity and inclusion.
Her work has received recognition in Canada: My Soca Birthday Party was named among the best Canadian picture books of 2020.
