Yangsook Choi is a children’s author and illustrator originally from South Korea. She studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Choi has written and illustrated several picture books, often drawing on her experiences of growing up in Korea and moving to the United States.
Her debut as both author and illustrator came with The Name Jar, published in 2001 by Alfred A. Knopf. The book explores themes of identity and cultural integration through the story of a young Korean girl adjusting to life in America. Choi has also illustrated books for other authors, including New Cat by Yangsook Choi and Land of Morning Calm: Korean Culture Then and Now by John Stickler and Soma Han.
Choi’s work has been recognised by several organisations. The Name Jar was named an ALA Notable Book in 2002.
