Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Tillie Walden is an American cartoonist and illustrator known for her work in graphic novels and comics for children and young adults. She studied at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont, where she developed her distinctive visual storytelling style. Walden’s debut graphic novel, The End of Summer, was published by Avery Hill Publishing in 2015.
She has produced several notable works, including I Love This Part (2015) and A City Inside (2016), both published by Avery Hill Publishing. Walden’s graphic memoir, Spinning, was published by First Second Books in 2017. Spinning recounts her experiences as a competitive figure skater and explores themes of identity and adolescence.
Walden’s other works include On a Sunbeam, which was published by First Second Books in 2018. This science fiction graphic novel was originally released as a webcomic before being published in print. She has also contributed to anthologies and has been recognised with several awards for her contributions to comics and graphic novels.
In 2021, Walden published Are You Listening? with First Second Books, further establishing her reputation as a creator of innovative and emotionally resonant graphic novels for young readers.
