Thomas Harding biography

Thomas Harding is a British non-fiction author, journalist and documentary maker. He was born in London in 1968 and educated at Westminster School before reading anthropology and political science at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

Harding has published widely on twentieth- and twenty-first-century history, memory and justice. His works include Hanns and Rudolf: The German Jew and the Hunt for the Kommandant of Auschwitz (2013), which won the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize for Non-Fiction, and The House by the Lake: Berlin. One House. Five Families. A Hundred Years of History (2015).

In 2018 he published Blood on the Page: A Murder, a Secret Trial, a Search for the Truth, for which he received the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction. His other titles include Legacy: One Family, a Cup of Tea, and the Company Who Took on the World (2019) and White Debt: The Demerara Uprising and Britain’s Legacy of Slavery (2022).

Harding has also produced children’s and young-reader works. In 2020, he published a picture-book edition of The House by the Lake and a young-adult title, Future History: 2050. He collaborates with illustrator Britta Teckentrup on projects such as The House on the Canal.

His journalism has appeared in outlets such as The Guardian, The Sunday Times and The Washington Post. In 2024 he was elected visiting fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.

Blood on the Page won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction.
