Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Terry Jones was a British writer, actor, comedian, and director, known for his work with Monty Python and as an author of children’s books. He studied English at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Jones co-created and performed in the television series Monty Python’s Flying Circus and co-directed films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian.
Jones wrote several children’s books, including Fairy Tales (1981), illustrated by Michael Foreman, and The Saga of Erik the Viking (1983), which was shortlisted for the 1984 Carnegie Medal. Erik the Viking was later adapted into a film, which Jones wrote and directed. Other works include The Knight and the Squire (1998), The Lady and the Squire (2001), and The Beast with a Thousand Teeth (2005).
Jones’s books have been published by Puffin and Pavilion. He also wrote Fantastic Stories (1992), Nicobobinus (1985), and The Curse of the Vampire Socks (2006). His collaboration with illustrator Michael Foreman was a recurring feature in his children’s literature.
In 2016, Jones received a Special Award from BAFTA Cymru for outstanding contribution to film and television. The Saga of Erik the Viking remains one of his most recognised children’s books.
