Terry Fan is a Canadian author and illustrator of children’s picture books, known for his intricate and imaginative artwork. Born in Illinois, he was raised in Toronto, Canada, where he received formal art training at the Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCAD University). His artistic style blends traditional techniques, such as ink and graphite, with digital media, resulting in whimsical and detailed illustrations.
Fan collaborates with his brother, Eric Fan, under the collective name “The Fan Brothers.” Together, they have created several acclaimed picture books, including The Night Gardener (2016), Ocean Meets Sky (2018), and It Fell from the Sky (2021). Their work has been recognized with numerous awards, such as the 2020 Governor General’s Award for Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books for The Barnabus Project, a collaboration with their brother Devin Fan.
In addition to their collaborative works, Terry Fan has illustrated other authors’ books, including The Darkest Dark (2016) by Chris Hadfield and The Antlered Ship (2018) by Dashka Slater. His illustrations are characterized by their detailed linework, imaginative settings, and a sense of wonder that appeals to both children and adults.
