Suzy Lee biography

Suzy Lee is a Korean author and illustrator known for her distinctive picture books. She studied painting at Seoul National University and later earned a Master of Arts in Book Arts from Camberwell College of Arts in London. Lee’s work often explores the interplay between reality and imagination, and she is recognised for her use of the physical book format as part of the storytelling process.

Her books include Wave, Shadow, and Mirror, which together form what she refers to as the “Border Trilogy.” These wordless picture books are noted for their creative use of the centre binding, or “gutter,” as a visual and narrative element. Lee’s illustrations are typically rendered in charcoal, pencil, and watercolour, and her stories frequently focus on themes of childhood, play, and discovery.

Suzy Lee’s work has received international recognition. She was awarded the Gold Medal for Original Art by the Society of Illustrators in 2008 for Wave. In 2022, she won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, presented by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).
