Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Susan Mitchell is a Scottish illustrator whose work includes children’s books, greeting cards, notebooks and licensed giftware. She studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art before developing her illustration work for books and commercial publishing.
Mitchell works mainly with traditional materials, including pencil, watercolour and hand-painted paper collage. Her subject matter includes animals, plants, food and nature-based imagery.
Her book illustration work includes chapter books, novelty books and picture books for publishers including Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Random House. She illustrated Claire and the Unicorn Happy Ever After, written by B. G. Hennessy and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, and Paula Deen’s My First Cookbook, written by Paula Deen with Martha Nesbit.
In 2026, Mitchell was shortlisted for the Kelpies Prize for Illustration alongside Flora Luckman, Aneta Lukianska, Anna Mac and Jenni Sheward.
