Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Sue Palmer writes children’s adventure fiction for readers aged 7 to 12. Her published books include May’s Moon, May’s Moon: Fortis Mission and The Shell Secret.
May’s Moon, published under the name S. Y. Palmer, follows thirteen-year-old Michael May as he competes for a place on a fictional Children’s Moon Program. May’s Moon: Fortis Mission continues Michael’s story as a fifteen-year-old on a mission involving the International Space Station and the far side of the moon.
Palmer runs KS2 workshops for schools, libraries and bookshops. Her workshop topics include space exploration, habitats, ecosystems and story writing, with sessions linked to her May’s Moon books and The Shell Secret.
The Shell Secret, published by Candy Jar Books, is a middle-grade adventure mystery set on the Cornish coast. The story follows eleven-year-old Alice Clark as she tries to build a shell memorial for her sister Poppy and becomes involved in a World War II mystery with her new neighbour Jasper.
The Shell Secret was published by Candy Jar Books in 2025.
