Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Sue Cheung is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. She has written and illustrated several books, often drawing on her own experiences to inform her stories. Cheung’s writing frequently explores themes of family, identity, and growing up, and she is recognised for her distinctive voice and humour.
Cheung’s debut novel for young readers, Chinglish: An Almost Entirely True Story, was published by Andersen Press in 2019. The book is a semi-autobiographical account of a British-Chinese girl navigating adolescence in 1980s Coventry, and it incorporates diary entries, doodles, and comic strips. Chinglish was shortlisted for the 2020 Carnegie Medal and won the Diverse Book Award in 2020.
In addition to her novels, Cheung has illustrated picture books and contributed artwork to various projects. Her work includes the picture book Bob vs the Selfie Zombies, published by Andersen Press in 2019. Cheung’s illustrations are characterised by their playful style and ability to complement her storytelling.
Cheung’s books have been recognised for their contribution to children’s literature, particularly in representing British-Chinese experiences. In 2020, Chinglish: An Almost Entirely True Story won the Diverse Book Award.
