Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Stephen King is an American author known for his prolific output in the genres of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy. His first published novel, Carrie, appeared in 1974. King’s works include The Shining (1977), The Stand (1978), It (1986), and The Dark Tower series, which began with The Gunslinger in 1982. He has written over sixty novels and more than two hundred short stories, many of which have been adapted for film and television.
King’s books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide. He has received numerous literary awards, including the Bram Stoker Award, the World Fantasy Award, and the British Fantasy Society Award. In 2003, the National Book Foundation awarded him the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. His novella The Body was adapted into the film Stand by Me (1986), and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption became the basis for the film The Shawshank Redemption (1994).
King has published works under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, including Thinner (1984) and The Running Man (1982). His 1987 novel Misery won the inaugural Bram Stoker Award for Novel. In 2015, King received the Edgar Award for Best Novel for Mr. Mercedes. His 2008 novella collection Just After Sunset and 2018’s The Outsider are among his later works. King’s influence extends across literature and popular culture, with many of his stories adapted into major films and television series.
In 2014, King was awarded the National Medal of Arts by the United States National Endowment for the Arts.
