Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Sophy Henn is a British author and illustrator known for her vibrant and humorous books for children. She lives and works in Sussex. Henn studied Fashion at Central Saint Martins before completing a master’s degree in Illustration at the University of Brighton. Prior to becoming a full-time author-illustrator, she worked in advertising as an art director.
Her debut picture book, Where Bear?, was published in 2014 and received critical recognition, including a shortlisting for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and a nomination for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Since then, she has written and illustrated a range of books for different age groups.
Among her popular works are the Pom Pom series, which explores toddler behaviour and emotions, and the Ted board books aimed at younger readers. Her Bad Nana series presents a comedic take on family life through the eyes of a spirited grandmother and her granddaughter. For older readers, Henn created the Pizazz series, which follows a reluctant young superhero navigating both school and superpowers.
Henn is also the author of the Lifesize series, a collection of non-fiction titles that feature life-sized illustrations of animals and are designed to spark curiosity about the natural world.
In 2015 and 2016, she was selected as the official World Book Day Illustrator, highlighting her contribution to children’s literacy and illustration in the UK. She continues to write and illustrate books that are widely used in schools and libraries, and she regularly appears at festivals and author events across the country.
