Children’s book news for July 2026: Beth O’Brien wins the Carnegie and UKLA awards, Patrice Lawrence becomes Children’s Laureate, John Agard takes a third CLiPPA, and Little Smith launches.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Soofiya is a gender non-conforming artist and illustrator. They illustrated Juno Dawson’s What’s the T?: The no-nonsense guide to all things trans and/or non-binary for teens, a non-fiction guide for readers aged 14 and above. The book was published in the UK on 18 February 2021 by Wren & Rook.
Soofiya illustrated Chitra Soundar’s Nikhil and Jay: Off to India, a first chapter book for children aged 6 to 8. The story follows Nikhil and Jay as they travel to Chennai during the Christmas holidays, and the book uses black-and-white illustrations on every page to support newly independent readers. It was published by Otter-Barry in 2023.
Soofiya also illustrated Anu Adebogun’s It’s a Brave Young World: A Guide to Life, Relationships and Speaking Up, a non-fiction book for readers aged 9 to 11. The book covers identity, family, friendships, relationships, self-love, emotions, school, beliefs, the internet and personal safety.
