Sarah McIntyre is a British-American author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She studied Russian literature at Bryn Mawr College and later completed an MA in Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. McIntyre’s debut picture book, Morris the Mankiest Monster, written by Giles Andreae, was published by Random House in 2009 and won the Sheffield Children’s Book Award in 2010.
She is the creator of the Vern and Lettuce comic strip, which appeared in The DFC and was later published as a book by David Fickling Books in 2010. McIntyre has collaborated with author Philip Reeve on several books, including Oliver and the Seawigs (2013), Cakes in Space (2014), Pugs of the Frozen North (2015), Jinks & O’Hare Funfair Repair (2016), and Kevin and the Biscuit Bandit (2021). Pugs of the Frozen North won the Independent Bookshop Week Book Award in 2016.
Her solo works include There’s a Shark in the Bath (2014) and Dinosaur Police (2015), both published by Scholastic. McIntyre has also illustrated books by other authors, such as You Can’t Eat a Princess! and You Can’t Scare a Princess! by Gillian Rogerson.
She is an advocate for the recognition of illustrators in children’s publishing and co-founded the #PicturesMeanBusiness campaign to promote illustrator credit. In 2015, McIntyre was awarded the British Comics Award for Best Book for Pugs of the Frozen North with Philip Reeve.
In 2023, McIntyre and Reeve published Adventuremice: Otter Chaos! with Oxford University Press.
