Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson studied engineering and later law at the University of Edinburgh, qualifying for the Scottish bar in 1875. He is best known for his adventure novels and works for children and young adults.
Stevenson’s most notable works include Treasure Island (1883), a classic adventure novel featuring the character Long John Silver, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a novella exploring themes of duality and identity. He also wrote Kidnapped (1886), a historical adventure set in Scotland, and its sequel Catriona (1893). His other works for younger readers include A Child’s Garden of Verses (1885), a collection of poetry for children.
Stevenson’s writing was widely published during his lifetime, and his books have remained in print since their first publication. Treasure Island has been adapted for stage, film, and television numerous times. Stevenson’s works have been translated into multiple languages and are part of the English literary canon.
He was elected to the Royal Society of Literature in 1887. Stevenson died in 1894. His literary legacy includes a significant influence on the adventure and horror genres, with Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde regarded as enduring classics.
