Richard Platt is a British author known for his work in children’s non-fiction, particularly on subjects such as history, science, and technology. He has written numerous books aimed at young readers, often collaborating with illustrators to create engaging and informative texts. Platt is recognised for his ability to present complex topics in accessible ways, making learning enjoyable for children.
Among his notable works is the Diary series, which includes titles such as Castle Diary: The Journal of Tobias Burgess, Page and Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter. These books use a diary format to immerse readers in historical settings, providing insights into daily life in different periods. Pirate Diary, illustrated by Chris Riddell, won the Blue Peter Book Award for Best Book with Facts in 2002.
Platt has also authored books on maritime subjects, including Cross Sections: Ship and Eyewitness: Pirate, both published by Dorling Kindersley. His collaboration with illustrator Stephen Biesty on the Cross Sections series has been particularly well received for its detailed cutaway illustrations and informative text.
In addition to his historical and maritime works, Platt has written on a range of topics, including science and the natural world. His books are published by several major publishers, including Walker Books and Dorling Kindersley.
In 2002, Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter was awarded the Blue Peter Book Award for Best Book with Facts.
