Rebecca Oxtoby is a British author and speech and language therapist. Her professional background includes working as a clinical lead in stroke speech and language therapy. Her first book, Mum’s the Word (2020), is a humorous non-fiction account of the first year of parenthood. She followed it with Mum’s the Word 2: It’s All Sh*ts and Giggles in 2021, exploring the transition from caring for a baby to raising a toddler. Both books were independently published.
Oxtoby is also the author of the children’s picture book Why Does Grandad Forget?, illustrated by Lorna Humphreys and independently published in May 2021. Written in rhyme, the story follows a young girl whose grandfather begins behaving differently. Through their relationship, the book introduces children to dementia, memory loss and changes in a family member’s behaviour.
Oxtoby participated in the 2022 Warrington Literature Festival, where she was featured in an author event about her Mum’s the Word books. In September 2026, Why Does Grandad Forget? was included in a collection of picture books selected for distribution to schools and community groups in Jersey through a partnership between Dementia Jersey and Every Child Our Future.
