Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Pragya Agarwal is a behavioural and data scientist, author, and speaker. She has written both non-fiction books for adults and illustrated children’s books. Agarwal holds a PhD and has worked as an academic in the UK and the USA, specialising in spatial cognition, data science, and social and environmental justice.
Her non-fiction works include Sway: Unravelling Unconscious Bias (2020), which explores the science and impact of bias in society, and (M)otherhood: On the Choices of Being a Woman (2021), which examines the complexities of motherhood and reproductive choices. Agarwal’s book Hysterical: Exploding the Myth of Gendered Emotions was published in 2022 and investigates the cultural and scientific history of emotions and gender.
In addition to her adult non-fiction, Agarwal has written and illustrated children’s books. Her picture book Wish We Knew What to Say: Talking with Children About Race was published in 2020. This book provides guidance for adults on how to discuss race and racism with children.
Agarwal is a regular contributor to national and international media, writing on topics such as bias, parenting, and social justice. She has delivered talks and workshops for a range of organisations and has been involved in public engagement and advocacy work related to equality and diversity.
Her book Hysterical: Exploding the Myth of Gendered Emotions was published by Canongate in 2022.
