Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Philip Reeve is a British author and illustrator, best known for his work in children’s and young adult fiction. He began his career illustrating for the Horrible Histories series. Reeve’s debut novel, Mortal Engines, was published by Scholastic in 2001. This book is the first in the Mortal Engines Quartet, followed by Predator’s Gold (2003), Infernal Devices (2005), and A Darkling Plain (2006).
Reeve has also written the Fever Crumb series, which serves as a prequel to the Mortal Engines books. The first title, Fever Crumb, was published in 2009, followed by A Web of Air (2010) and Scrivener’s Moon (2011).
In addition to his science fiction works, Reeve authored the Railhead trilogy, beginning with Railhead (2015), followed by Black Light Express (2016) and Station Zero (2018). He has collaborated with Sarah McIntyre on illustrated books such as Oliver and the Seawigs (2013), Cakes in Space (2014), Pugs of the Frozen North (2015), and Jinks & O’Hare Funfair Repair (2016).
Reeve’s work has received several awards. Mortal Engines won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Gold Award in 2002. A Darkling Plain received the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 2006 and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature in 2007. Railhead was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal in 2016.
In 2018, Mortal Engines was adapted into a feature film directed by Christian Rivers and produced by Peter Jackson.
