Dr Peter Raven is a British medical doctor and academic author who has written textbooks on endocrinology, human reproduction and biology. He graduated from St Bartholomew’s Medical School in 1985, having completed a BSc in biochemistry, a PhD in adrenal endocrinology and an MBBS medical degree.
After qualifying as a doctor, Raven specialised in psychiatry, completing his specialist training in 1995. In 1994, he received the Gold Medal and Gaskell Prize from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He subsequently worked as an academic psychiatrist and Faculty Tutor at University College London until 2014.
Raven has collaborated with Professor Joy Hinson on several medical and biological textbooks, including The Endocrine System and Hormones. The latter was published by Oxford University Press in 2019 as part of its Oxford Biology Primers series. It examines the endocrine system, explaining how hormones influence development, reproduction, behaviour and disease in humans and other animals.
Raven and Hinson also co-authored Reproduction Biology, published by Oxford University Press in April 2025. Written primarily for students aged 16 to 19, the book examines sexual and asexual reproduction across plants and animals, reproductive strategies, environmental challenges and developments in human reproductive medicine. It forms part of the Oxford Biology Primers series, which supports the transition from school biology to undergraduate study.
