Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Pam Smy is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. She studied Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, where she later became a lecturer. Smy has illustrated numerous books for other authors, including Lob by Linda Newbery and The Brockenspectre by Linda Newbery, as well as Flora and the Penguin by Molly Idle.
Her debut as both author and illustrator came with Thornhill, published by David Fickling Books in 2017. Thornhill is a hybrid novel combining prose and illustration, and it was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Kate Greenaway Medal. The book has been translated into several languages.
Smy’s second author-illustrator title, The Hideaway, was published by Pavilion Books in 2021. She has also contributed illustrations to anthologies and educational publications.
Her work has been recognised by the Association of Illustrators and the Society of Authors. Thornhill was included in the 2018 Carnegie Medal longlist.
