P.G Wodehouse biography

P. G. Wodehouse was a comic writer whose life spanned 1881 to 1975. His full name was Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, and he was awarded a KBE. His writing career lasted more than seventy years, and his main fictional setting drew on English upper-class society before the Second World War.

Wodehouse wrote more than 70 novels and 200 short stories. He created Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, Lord Emsworth and the Empress of Blandings, Mr Mulliner, Ukridge and Psmith. His fiction includes the Jeeves stories, the Blandings Castle stories, the Psmith books, the Mr Mulliner stories and the Drones Club stories.

Wodehouse also wrote humorous articles for more than 80 magazines, including Punch, across six decades. He worked as a playwright and lyricist, writing or helping to write fifteen plays and 250 lyrics for about thirty musical comedies. His stage work included collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes in 1934, and with Jerome Kern and Guy Bolton on musical comedy projects.

His musical-theatre work included lyrics for Bill in Show Boat in 1927, lyrics for Rosalie in 1928, and collaboration with Rudolf Friml on a musical version of The Three Musketeers in 1928. Wodehouse received the Mark Twain Prize for an outstanding and lasting contribution to the happiness of the world.
