Nelson Mandela was a South African leader and anti-apartheid activist whose life and work have been adapted for children and young adults in various publications. Mandela is credited as the author of Long Walk to Freedom, his autobiography, which has been published in an abridged edition for younger readers. This edition presents Mandela’s experiences growing up in rural South Africa, his involvement in the struggle against apartheid, and his years of imprisonment.
Mandela’s story has been used to educate children and young people about social justice, equality, and the history of South Africa. The abridged version of Long Walk to Freedom was published by Macmillan Children’s Books in 2009. In addition to his autobiography, Mandela is also credited as the author of Nelson Mandela’s Favourite African Folktales, a collection of traditional stories from across the African continent, published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2002.
Mandela’s books for younger audiences aim to inspire and inform readers about the values of perseverance, forgiveness, and leadership. His work has been recognised internationally, and his life story continues to be shared with new generations through these publications. In 2002, Nelson Mandela’s Favourite African Folktales was published, bringing together a range of stories that reflect the diversity and richness of African oral traditions.
