Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Morris Gleitzman is an Australian author of children’s and young adult fiction. He grew up in England and moved to Australia when he was sixteen.
After university, Gleitzman worked for ten years as a screenwriter. His first children’s novel, The Other Facts of Life, was published in 1985 after he adapted the story from his original television screenplay.
His books include Two Weeks with the Queen, Misery Guts, Worry Warts, Blabber Mouth, Sticky Beak, Bumface, Boy Overboard, Girl Underground, Toad Rage, Grace, Loyal Creatures and Tweet. He has also co-written books with Paul Jennings, including the Wicked! series.
Once, first published in 2005, began the Felix series about a Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied Poland. The sequence continued with Then, Now, After, Soon, Maybe and Always.
Gleitzman was appointed Australian Children’s Laureate for 2018–2019. During his laureateship, his stated theme was “Stories Make Us – Stories Create Our Future”.
The UK edition of Childish is scheduled for publication by Puffin on 27 August 2026.
