Mem Fox is an Australian author best known for her work in children’s literature. She was born in Melbourne and is recognised for her contributions to picture books and early childhood literacy. Fox studied drama at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney and later became an Associate Professor of Literacy Studies at Flinders University in Adelaide.
Her first book, Possum Magic, was published by Omnibus Books in 1983. The story, illustrated by Julie Vivas, has become one of the most well-known Australian children’s books. Fox has written numerous other picture books, including Time for Bed, Where Is the Green Sheep? (illustrated by Judy Horacek), and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge (illustrated by Julie Vivas). Her books are often noted for their rhythmic language and focus on themes relevant to young children.
In addition to her writing, Fox has worked as a literacy consultant and has delivered lectures and workshops on the importance of reading aloud to children. She has also written books for adults on literacy and the craft of writing for children.
Mem Fox’s book Where Is the Green Sheep?, illustrated by Judy Horacek, was published by Penguin Books in 2004.
