Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Matt Whyman (born 1969) is an English author of fiction and non-fiction, primarily for young adults, as well as a former advice columnist.
Whyman grew up in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and completed an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
His breakout novel, Boy Kills Man (2004), tells a story of child assassins in Medellín, Colombia. It was shortlisted for the Booktrust Teenage Book Prize and other awards.
Other novels by Whyman include The Wild, The Savages (winner of the Angus Book Award, 2014), and Bad Apple.
In non-fiction and collaborative writing, Whyman has contributed to or ghostwritten works with figures such as Joe Sugg (on the graphic novel Username: Evie), Billy Connolly, Gareth Southgate and Sir David Attenborough.
Beyond books, he has held roles as an agony uncle and advice columnist for Bliss magazine, AOL UK and BBC Radio 1’s The Surgery.
He has also been embedded with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, producing the book Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the Fast Lane (2024).
