Matt Tavares is an American author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature, particularly picture books that often focus on sports and historical themes. He studied at Bates College, where he created a picture book for his senior thesis that later became his first published book, Zachary’s Ball. This debut was published by Candlewick Press in 2000.
Tavares has both written and illustrated numerous books, and he has also illustrated works by other authors. His bibliography includes titles such as Henry Aaron’s Dream, There Goes Ted Williams, and Becoming Babe Ruth. In addition to sports biographies, Tavares has illustrated classic stories and holiday-themed books, including ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and Red and Lulu.
His illustrations are known for their detailed, realistic style, often rendered in watercolour and pencil. Tavares’s books have received recognition from various organisations, including the American Library Association and the Society of Illustrators.
In 2023, Matt Tavares published Hoops, a graphic novel inspired by a true story, with Candlewick Press.
