Marjane Satrapi biography

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born French author, illustrator, and filmmaker, best known for her graphic novels. She studied at the Lycée Français in Tehran before moving to Vienna and later settling in France. Satrapi’s work often draws on her personal experiences and the history of Iran.

Her most widely recognised work is the graphic novel Persepolis, first published in French by L’Association in 2000. Persepolis is an autobiographical account of her childhood and early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. The book has been published in several volumes and has received critical attention for its depiction of historical events through the lens of personal narrative and visual storytelling.

Satrapi has also written and illustrated other graphic novels, including Embroideries and Chicken with Plums. Her work has been published in English by Jonathan Cape and Pantheon Books. In addition to her writing and illustration, Satrapi co-directed the animated film adaptation of Persepolis, which premiered in 2007.

In 2001, Marjane Satrapi received the Angoulême Coup de Coeur Award for Persepolis.
