Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Mariko Tamaki is a Canadian writer of comics and prose. Her graphic novel Skim, created with Jillian Tamaki, was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and received the Doug Wright Award for Best Graphic Novel, the Ignatz Award and the Joe Shuster Award. She was awarded the Writers’ Trust Honour of Distinction for her body of work.
Tamaki co-created This One Summer with Jillian Tamaki; the graphic novel was released on 6 May 2014 by First Second. This One Summer received both a Caldecott Honor and a Printz Honor, and it was also recognised in Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2014.
Her prose novel Saving Montgomery Sole was published by Roaring Brook Press and follows a teenage girl in Aunty, California, who is drawn to mysteries while navigating school and family life. Tamaki also writes superhero stories for Marvel and DC Comics, with titles including Supergirl: Being Super, I Am Not Starfire, Thor & Loki: Double Trouble and Peter Parker & Miles Morales: Spider-Men Double Trouble.
Tamaki co-created Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me with Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, and that graphic novel received an Eisner Award and a Printz Honor. In 2024, Roaming, created by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki, won three Eisner Awards: Best Writer for Mariko Tamaki, Best Penciller/Inker for Jillian Tamaki and Best Graphic Album–New.
