Lucy Strange is a British author acclaimed for her atmospheric children’s novels that blend historical settings with elements of folklore and magical realism. Her storytelling is noted for its lyrical prose and exploration of themes such as identity, resilience, and the power of imagination.
Strange studied English Literature at the University of Sheffield and trained at the Oxford School of Drama. She initially worked as an actor, singer, and storyteller before transitioning to a career in education as an English and Drama teacher. It was during her teaching tenure that she began writing fiction for young readers, aiming to create stories that resonate with both children and adults.
Her debut novel, The Secret of Nightingale Wood (2016), received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Awesome Book Awards. This was followed by Our Castle by the Sea (2019), which was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and nominated for the Carnegie Medal. Subsequent works include The Ghost of Gosswater (2020), Sisters of the Lost Marsh (2022), and The Island at the Edge of Night (2023). Strange has also authored dyslexia-friendly novellas such as The Mermaid in the Millpond and The Storm and the Minotaur, published by Barrington Stoke.
Her novels are often inspired by British landscapes and folklore, creating richly textured worlds that captivate readers aged nine and up. Strange’s work has been recognised for its contribution to children’s literature, with accolades including the Historical Association Young Quills Award for Our Castle by the Sea.
Beyond writing, Strange engages with readers through school visits and literary festivals, sharing her passion for storytelling and encouraging young people to explore history and imagination through literature.
