Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Louisa MacDougall is a Scottish children’s author whose books include Rory and the Snack Dragons, The Great Auk’s Great Escape and The Highland Cowgirl.
Before writing books for children, MacDougall worked as a journalist, teacher and community worker. Her first children’s book was published in 2024.
Rory and the Snack Dragons, illustrated by Laura Jackson, was published by Little Door Books. The story features Rory, a dragon who likes snacks, and Princess Flora, who helps him when the kingdom’s cakes go missing.
Her picture-book work includes The Great Auk’s Great Escape and The Highland Cowgirl. The Highland Cowgirl, illustrated by Sarah Lovell, follows Hanna and Calamity Jane, a Highland calf.
MacDougall’s writing has been shortlisted for the Kelpies Prize, the Writing Magazine prize and the Searchlight Awards. She was named on the Kelpies Prize for Writing 2026 shortlist.
