Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Liz Hyder is a British author known for her work in children’s and young adult fiction. She studied at the University of Bristol and has a background in public relations, including work in the arts sector. Hyder’s debut young adult novel, Bearmouth, was published by Pushkin Children’s Books in 2019. The novel is set in a mining community and explores themes of language, power, and resistance.
Bearmouth received critical attention and was recognised with several awards. It won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Readers in 2020 and the Branford Boase Award in the same year. Hyder’s writing is noted for its distinctive narrative voice and exploration of challenging topics within accessible stories for young readers.
In addition to her work for young people, Hyder has written for adults. Her debut adult novel, The Gifts, was published by Manilla Press in 2022.
Liz Hyder’s Bearmouth won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Readers in 2020.
