Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Lila Cruz is a writer and illustrator whose books include Almanaque de Autocuidado, published in 2019, and Como ser adulta e outras (im)possibilidades, published in 2021. Her other writing includes Pequeno Livro de Felicidades, Nostálgica, Desnuda and Ansiedade.
Cruz illustrated O círculo: conversando a gente se entende by Carolina Nalon, a 56-page paperback about restorative dialogue and Comunicação Não Violenta, published on 10 October 2022. She also illustrated Bem-vindos ao Hippie: Capítulo extra ilustrado by Pedro Rhuas, published as a Kindle edition on 10 October 2025.
For younger readers in the UK, Cruz was one of the illustrators of It’s a Brave Young World: A Guide to Life, Relationships and Speaking Up, written by Anu Adebogun and also illustrated by Soofiya. The non-fiction book is published by Little Tiger, has an interest age of 9 to 11 and a reading age of 9+. It’s a Brave Young World was longlisted for the 2026 UKLA Book Awards and shortlisted for the 2026 Information Book Award.
