Lesléa Newman is an American author and poet known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She has written more than 80 books across various genres, including poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Newman is recognised for addressing themes such as family, identity, and social justice in her work.

One of her most notable books is Heather Has Two Mommies, first published in 1989. This picture book is widely cited as one of the first children’s books to portray a family with same-sex parents. Newman’s bibliography also includes titles such as Donovan’s Big Day, Ketzel, the Cat Who Composed, and Gittel’s Journey: An Ellis Island Story.

In addition to her work for children, Newman has published poetry collections and novels for young adults. Her writing often explores themes of diversity, acceptance, and resilience. She has also served as a faculty member at various educational institutions, teaching creative writing and literature.
