Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Lauren Sharples is an author-illustrator and printmaker working in children’s books. She completed a BA in Illustration at Leeds Arts University in 2023 and earned an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from Cambridge School of Art in 2025.
Her Cambridge School of Art MA show included the children’s book projects Walter the Dragon, Clip Clop! and Brave. Her image-making uses traditional printmaking techniques and recycled materials, including Tetra Pak and reclaimed paper.
Sharples has received recognition in illustration awards and showcases, including a 2022 Penguin Cover Design Award shortlist, a 2024 World Illustration Awards shortlist, a 2025 Macmillan Prize for Illustration highly commended place and a 2025 Picture This! Walker Books win.
In 2026, she was longlisted for the World Illustration Awards and shortlisted for the inaugural Children’s Books North Network Prize.
