Lauren Child is a renowned British author and illustrator, best known for her children’s books. She was born in 1965 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. Child studied Art at Manchester Polytechnic and later attended City and Guilds of London Art School. Her career in children’s literature began with the publication of Clarice Bean, That’s Me in 1999, which introduced readers to the character Clarice Bean.
Child gained widespread recognition with her Charlie and Lola series, starting with I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato in 2000. This book won the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal in 2000, awarded by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. The series was later adapted into a successful television programme.
In addition to Charlie and Lola, Child created the Ruby Redfort series, which follows the adventures of a young detective. The first book, Look Into My Eyes, was published in 2011. The series has been well-received and praised for its engaging storytelling and strong female protagonist.
Child’s work has been translated into multiple languages, and she has received numerous accolades throughout her career. In 2008, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to literature. In 2017, she was named the Children’s Laureate, a role she held until 2019.
