Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Laura Noakes is a British author known for her debut children’s novel, Cosima Unfortunate Steals a Star, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in 2023. The book is set in Victorian London and follows the adventures of Cosima and her friends as they attempt a daring heist. Noakes has a background in legal history and completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the history of disabled people in the legal profession. Her academic work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. Cosima Unfortunate Steals a Star was selected as Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month in June 2023. Noakes’s writing is informed by her research interests in history and disability. Her debut novel has been positively received and is aimed at middle-grade readers. In 2023, Cosima Unfortunate Steals a Star was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award.
