Kremena Dimitrova is an illustrator, researcher and educator whose work includes children’s books, comics, historical interpretation and educational resources. She studied Illustration at Middlesex University and completed an MA in Art and Design in Education at UCL Institute of Education in 2016. She subsequently completed a practice-based PhD in Visualising History at the University of Portsmouth, investigating the use of comics, maps and visual storytelling to explore historical narratives.
Dimitrova has illustrated children’s activity books for Lonely Planet Kids, including Adventures in Cold Places (2014) and Adventures in Smelly Places (2015). She also contributed illustrations to Adventures Around the Globe (2015). As Illustrator in Residence at Benjamin Franklin House in London, she created Benjamin Franklin: At Home in London, a children’s activity book published in 2019 with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The book includes reusable stickers, maps and puzzles relating to Franklin’s life in London.
Her work in historical illustration includes Think in Your Heart Think… Machar Colony, Statelessness and the Search for Belonging, an educational comic developed with researcher Dr Humera Iqbal and young people in Pakistan. Published by Markings Publishing in 2024, the project combines archival material, personal accounts and children’s drawings to explore identity, migration and statelessness. Dimitrova has also undertaken illustration and educational projects for the British Museum, Manchester Museum, East Street Arts and the Museum of the Home.
Dimitrova illustrated The Secret of the Bush: A Story of Healing and Repair, written by Dr Grazia Caleo. Based on Caleo’s experiences working with Médecins Sans Frontières during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the book follows ten-year-old Baby Fatau and her grandmother, a traditional healer, as Ebola reaches their village in Sierra Leone. The story examines illness, family relationships, stigma and community support. The Secret of the Bush was published by Salammbo Press on 10 March 2025.
