Children’s book news for July 2026: Beth O’Brien wins the Carnegie and UKLA awards, Patrice Lawrence becomes Children’s Laureate, John Agard takes a third CLiPPA, and Little Smith launches.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Klas Fahlén is an illustrator with professional experience in advertising, design and publishing. His illustration influences include Picasso and the Swedish illustrator Stina Wirsén, and his work uses simple lines and colourful illustrations.
Fahlén illustrated Building a Home, a 32-page picture book written by Polly Faber and published in paperback by Nosy Crow on 7 April 2022. The book follows the transformation of an old building into a new home and introduces young readers to builders, cranes, diggers, cement mixers, tools and machinery.
He also illustrated Special Delivery: A Book’s Journey Around the World, written by Polly Faber and published by Candlewick on 4 April 2023. The 32-page informational picture book traces how a book travels from a factory through transport, warehousing, a bookshop and the postal system before reaching a child reader.
Fahlén continued working with Polly Faber on the Understanding the World series, including Recycling Day: What Happens to the Things We Throw Away and From Seed to Sandwich. From Seed to Sandwich is scheduled for publication by Nosy Crow on 8 April 2027, and Recycling Day was shortlisted for the 2026 Information Book Awards.
