Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Kate Muldowney is a 2D designer and illustrator with experience in animation. She has worked at Sun & Moon, Lupus Films and Killogramme animation studio. Her portfolio includes illustration, props and backgrounds, character designs, production work, storyboards and comic pages.
Muldowney studied Animation at the University of Lancashire and completed an MA in Animation at Nottingham Trent University. Her MA project focused on visual development for an animated film about a Forest Giant, a pollution monster and a young boy, with designs developed for a young audience.
Her illustration work uses both digital software and traditional materials, including pencils, inks and paints. In 2026, she was shortlisted for the inaugural Children’s Books North Network Prize for aspiring picture-book illustrators, after entrants responded to Corrinne Averiss’s text Fabulous Frank.
